Linen Look Drapes

Issues abound here as to where I want to set up shop so to speak.  After clearing out the craft crap a few months ago to take back my dining room... said crap has found it's way back!  Seriously,  I really tried to keep it all confined to the bedroom closet (alright, well most of it anyway) but that solution just is NOT working well for me!

The dining table just became a catch all for all the other crap that makes it's way thru our door and was not used for eating purposes even once!  SO, I've decided to set up shop again in the dining room... but with some order this time.  The dining room slash creative studio is a work in progress at this time!

I'd grown tired of the window dressings I'd had there recently and have not had much luck in finding a pre-made option that tickled my fancy so I opted to grab a simple flat sheet from Walmart (about 5 buckaroos) and made my own simple linen look drapes

Once I had found my bag of cafe curtain clippy things from a box deep in that dreaded crap craft closet, I began to split the drape flat sheet straight up the middle, lengthwise.

Bo Bo my assistant was on hand (or paw, ha ha) to inspect the cutting process.

I ran a simple straight stitch with my machine up the cut edges, but for a true NO sew project, feel free to use some iron on hem tape or even some glue (shhh, our secret) to close that edge!

The next step has reminded me how incredibly WeAK I am! I folded over the the top of each panel of the drape to bring the length just barely skimming the floor, each required only 5 of the cafe clips attached to the top because I used a twin flat sheet.  The width works for me as I only wanted to flank the sides of the window.

Man, those clips were a real b*&#@ to squeeze open!

Here they are hung on the decorative rod and up on the window.
An inexpensive bamboo shade provides just enough privacy while allowing the light to flood the room when I am working.  This room only has one window, so the sunlight is a much appreciated sight!

And, pretty please with a cherry on top... look past the UglY wall color... I am hoping to change that very very soon!  And don't judge the crafty crappy supply mess as it is also still in progress!

Think outside the box and jazz up some simple flat sheets the next time you are in need of a
Linen Look Drape
without the
Linen Cost!

I'll be back soon with some Dollar Store Fun!

Inspiration for the Future

Inspiration comes from many places and things.  Lately, I've been a bit frazzled, a whole lotta impatiant, and a heaping mess of 'where is my life supposed to go?'  Sometimes I wonder if my dreams will ever come true, I have lots of them you know (smile) but my impatiance gets the best of me... then I look at my kids.

My inspiration, my hope comes from above in the faces of my children.  Especially Alexis, that child has a magical way of reaching the core of my soul.  As a mother, I would love to take all the credit for who my children are.  A main purpose of being a parent is to teach and guide your kids... they are who they are because of us right? ... but they teach us so much more.

BUT, what does this have to do with dreams for the future?

When I feel down, when I feel lost, when I feel dreamless... I look at this face.
Each day this little girl pulls herself out of bed and heads off to school in the big scary world, she faces great

ADVERSITY

She faces her fears with each new day.  She carries the burden of pain on a daily basis with merely a mention to it.  She is deep.  She is a Thinker.  My daughter has an incredible belief in mankind.  I wonder at times if I were in her shoes, would I be as kind as she manages to be everyday?  Her tears on a bad day rip my heart apart... as only she holds the key to a very deep locked cavern in my heart.  Her smiles, hugs, and laughter are purely heavenly.  Her fight is never ending.

I look at that face
and I am Inspired beyond my wildest dreams to be better than I was the day before.

Where does your inspiration to dream come from?

Vertical Type Sports Sign

So much to do so little time.  Oh how I wish there were more hours in a day!  Yesterday my back wrenched up again so I spent the day in a whole lotta pain!  But, I had things to do, and cannot stand to be stuck in a chair or bed all day.  So in 15 minute incraments I worked on a vertical sign idea I've had in my head for a bit.   For me, girly ideas are quite easy to come by so when I get some inspiration to share with the boys in my life...I go with it before I lose it!

Basketball season here is winding down soon.  I wanted to come up with something for Austin to give to his coach.  I color blocked a vertical strip of thin wood with 'boy' colors.  Then I proceeded to antique, distress, and crackle the crapola out of it.  I sketched out some lettering from a few different fonts to spell the word 'coach'.  The O being the focus of the piece because it is made with a painted basketball - offset and going out of it's frame.

loVE it!

I'll be back shortly with a tutorial for you, for those of you who may want to give it a try for yourself.  For the rest of you, just letting you know that some vertical signs will be listed in my etsy shop soon!

My Vintage Valentine

Hope you all had a magnificent Valentine's Day!

Mine was well spent with a lovely little trip to the thrift store.  What more could a girl want than a few hours to herself to rummage through piles of discarded treasure looking for vintage gold?  Nope, I'm not a red rose kinda gal.

I wanted to share a glimpse of my little haul with you, I know you will appreciate them more than the hubster did.

*buttons*

lots and lots of pretty creamy white buttons!
I've wanted to fill this apothecary jar with buttons for about a year without spending a fortune.
$3 for a huge bag sure made me smile!

*vintage ribbon*

I snatched up 4 rolls of beautiful old ribbon spools on the cheap {$2}.  These are so old & gorgeous with a beautiful patina... such soft colors of cream and taupy rose.  The original pricing of 25 cents is printed on the spools from way back in the day!  They just may make it into my Etsy shop!

A vintage 'little' chair {which I'll share later} and some pretty silver spoons also found their way home with me.

Yes, I was met with a few sideways glances and mumbling of,

"thought you were trying to get rid of a bunch of junk, right?"

Jeez, I hate when they throw your words right back atcha'.
But
He just doesn't understand the concept of ridding the house of junk junk
to make room for the pretty vintage junk.

Thinking of bringing back the Link party soon, any thoughts on that?
I so love seeing what everyone is up to every week.
So, tell me... have you scored and Vintage Treasure lately?

Fruit Stand Rescue

When I pulled into the drive thru of my local Swiss Farms store, I saw him standing there by the dumpster.  My heart began to flutter at his sturdy rawness...Oh, the pure potential I saw in him.  I had to have him!

With nervous anticipation, I asked the workers if the were throwing him away.  I'm almost positive that my face was fire engine red as they explained that he was indeed headed for the trash; flushed because of the embarrassment I probably should have felt at the glaring 'crazy lady' looks I received.  I didn't care... he had to be mine. So begins the tale of the banana hammock rescue.

Yes, ladies... he is a banana hammock!  I know, I know.  I too can hardly contain the giggles that bubble up when I refer to him as 'The Banana Hammock"!  So for the sake of pretending we are all adults and not giddy school girls, I will from here on out refer to him as the "fruit stand".

When I first laid eyes on him, I envisioned an antiqued and distressed white coat of paint with a  beautiful graphic or some fancy scroll work on the front of each bucket shelf.  After getting him home and removing the top broken bucket shelf, I questioned whether he would look better in all his raw woodiness with a darker chocolaty stain.  I've been working on not second guessing my every decision (which leaves me frustrated and frozen and without alot of finished projects) so I went with my first vision.  After 2 coats of Sherwin William's White Dove paint I headed over to the Graphics Fairy for a lookie loo at her free graphics.  Been a fan of her site like 4-eva.  This is my first shot at using her graphics cause I'm kinda like a toddler who gets too many choices as to what to have for lunch;  I have a hard time making my decision and usually fall asleep with my face in the peas...

I did settle on 3 images.  It only took me 3 days to decide, but I did.  One for each bucket shelf.

This French typography was transferred with some transfer paper and a pencil to the middle bucket and hand painted in black paint.

The other 2 shelves were hand painted with 2 beautiful scroll options found at the Graphics Fairy also.

With a black Sharpie, I went in and drew in the more fancy line work on the Fabrique De Serrrurerie type.

My boy was antiqued with a glaze I whipped up with a dark chocolate acrylic and some water.  The glaze was applied sparingly with a brush and worked into the crevices and corners.

All in all, I am extremely pleased with how well he cleaned up.  Many thanks go to the graphics fairy for allowing us to use her beautiful images.  Now the hard part is figuring out exactly what I am going to use him for!  The ideas are overwhelming, bookshelf, towel holder, craft storage, plant holder.... too many choices to decide!  Guess you'll just have to come back over to see how I finally put this big guy to work!

I will be linking to these lovely parties listed here :

Easy Cupcake Roses for My Valentine!

I have some easy peasy Valentine Cupcakes to share with you today!  Yes, EEE ZZZZ.

Chances are you may already have all of the ingredients in your cupboard, if not a quick run to your closest supermarket is all you need to do get them!  No hoop jumping with this one!  I even used boxed cake mix and prepared frosting.  The secret to these pretties is Fruit by the Foot or some other type of fruit roll up (any brand, color, or flavor will work).

So prepare your cupcakes any way you want.  We used a box of devil's food and made 2 dozen,
 letting them cool.
Tip: when making chocolate cake or cupcakes, substitute 1/4 cup of coffee for some of the water... to die for moist and yummy.  You don't taste the coffee it just enhances the chocolate flavor!

Since my Boom is home with an ear infection today, she helped frost them with Mommy.
Nothing fancy schmancy needed... just cover the tops with your favorite icing.

Next we unrolled our fruit strip which will become our pretty flower cupcake topper.
I like the fruit by the foot because they separate down the middle with a squiggly line allowing me to make 2 flowers with each strip.

Fold over and pinch one end of the fruit strip.
Using the squiggly side up, begin rolling and pinching the candy at the bottom.

Kinda like making a rolled flower out of some fabric strips.

roll... pinch... fold... roll

Whatever method you feel will give you a pretty flower, then place them on top of the cupcakes.

Boom and I set up a pretty little vignette to snap some quick photos of our cakes for you!

Give it a try...

Go ahead and involve the kids in the decorating process!
Flowers are like children, the are all different but they are all oh so special!

After all, the only thing better than giving your family a sweet treat to tell them you love them is to share your time and attention with them!

I'll be back a bit later in the week with another rose cupcake to share for LOVE Day!

Preparations continue for the elementary school Variety Show this weekend, "Flash Back to the 80's".  I appreciate each and every idea you've shared with me!  The other day, I shared with you our flashback cell phone in traditional 80's HUGEness [here] and some posters painted on foam board featuring Ghost busters and a Neon Roller skate [here].

I wanted to show you what I did with the other postal box I picked up earlier in the week.  Of course it's meant for fun, not realism.  So go put your legwarmers on, tease up your hair a bit and dance!

Postal box before a coat of gray paint and some fun cartoonish details.

Postal box after.   Now, I think the addition of an antennae or a handle of some sort is needed, but I just love the way this turned out!  The kids love it too so I think there may be a fight after the show as to who's bedroom it ends up in!

Something I've learned this week. Foam board - 1. cool invention  2. Only a buck at the Dollar Tree Store.  3. Takes paint HoRRiBly!

If you ever find yourself in the position to need to make stage props or signs... just know that foam board curls up as it dries after being painted.  I'm a bit sad to see the boards looking all wonky after all of the hard work I've put into them.
