Sweet & Sassy Zebra cake- a closer look at our Sweet 16

As my kids get older, the realization that themed birthday parties are going to soon be a thing of the past for me... I just love a good party, so that makes me sad.

Although, regrets are a plenty for years gone by that we were unable to afford big extravagant parties with all the decor and grandeur this momma has learned a few tricks over the years to get a nice bang for just a little buck.  This is seen in Boom's Sweet 16 that I gave you a quick glimpse of last week.  Almost everything was found at our local Dollar or Discount Stores so as not to break the bank.  Let's look a bit closer at some of details used, shall we?

Our faux plank topped painted table was pushed up against the large monster of a hutch in my dining room, and both were draped with plastic table cloths from the dollar store.  Two white rounds were placed on the table offset as to hit the floor on all sides and 2 long pink rectangular plastic clothes were attached to the hutch with tape.  In a world with no budgets I would have ultimately chosen to use fabric... for the plastic was a bit sheer.  Another long pink cloth was split up the middle and draped across the top as an accent, also taped and allowed to drape and swag.  Boom and I had made some simple paper bunting banners draped on pink ribbon, paper flowers, and a large monogram 'A' with my Silhouette Cameo-  which we also taped to the backdrop.  I have no more pink paper left in my stash but hey it was for a good cause!

Our painted "Never let anyone ever dull your Sparkle" sign was placed leaning on the table and added a nice sentimental pop of pink!

The cake took center stage in our Sassy and Sweet pink zebra themed party.  A basket was flipped over and draped with {you guessed it} more pink plastic tablecloth to allow our cake to rise to center stage.  After all, what's a Sweets themed party without the sweets?   Boom wanted carrot cake, her favorite, so the top tier of the cake was carrot as she wished.  The bottom tier was more of a crowd favorite... a simple vanilla.  Yes... we made the cake together!

The fun part was adding the sugar sheets we had purchased from the craft store's Wilton isle in black and white zebra and a hot pink and black swirl.  If you have not yet tried this stuff...let me tell you it is sooo simple to work with!  Using plain old scissors we were able to cut them down to size to wrap the iced cake, alternating bands of both to decorate the sides.  You can even use your paper punches with this stuff... this will be my new 'go to' easy decor secret for cakes here!  I'm very aware that my top tier was a bit... lopsided... but no one else seemed to notice {yippee}.  A last minute idea to plop those giant pink daisies into the cake seems to add a little more Wimsey.

For those who had a bit of adventure, we whipped up some pink lemonade cupcakes with pink frosted tops... another Boom Favorite.  The cupcakes were simply spread out around the base of the raised cake.  Yummmm.

Hosting and decorating a party does not have to cost a fortune.  Come back later this week for a closer look at some of the other touches we added to make this day simply special!

Beating the Loneliness of Special Needs

Photobucket

This post was written as a contribution to the Living Life Special Blog Carnival. The participating bloggers are sharing their experiences in parenting or teaching children with special needs.  Also included are posts on how to educate others about special needs.

My family has grown so much since the birth of our daughter; discovering happiness and joy and seeing little miracles which our eyes had not been open to before.  The dawn of each new day holds great pleasure and gratitude that life before her had been missing.  So much is taken for granted, and the old adage "You don't know what you got til it's gone" holds such true meaning.
Being chosen by our Maker to be a 'Special Mom' is one of the greatest gifts I've ever been bestowed.

But, being that Mom is not all gumdrops and roses as you can imagine...
Having a daughter with multiple special needs has opened my eyes to many issues over the years; as mentioned some are simply wondrous but many are not quite so pleasant.  Life with a teenage daughter with multiple complex medical issues and special needs often seems to be a very lonely place- for both her and I.    Her sorrows and esteem issues haunt me.  I'm sure many of you can empathize that when your child {SN or not} is hurting and feeling blue, your heart breaks for them.

Most children, special needs or not, experience the unpleasantness of being left out and lonely at some point in their lifetime.  Both of my children have encountered rejection to some degree as they are growing up;  exclusion from a birthday party while all the 'other' kids are invited or a close friend suddenly stops knocking up for a friendly game of catch.  I've watched with anticipation as Boom tries very hard to include herself in activities with neighborhood children only to have my heart sink like an anchor as those children mindlessly turn their backs to her and 'move on' to another location to continue their play... without Boom.  We were recently invited to celebrate the Sweet 16 of a girl Boom has attended school with over the past 9 years.  This girl is above average in intelligence, very sweet, and very {for lack of a better word} normal with lots of normal friends.   I accompanied Boom to the party and witnessed again first hand the loneliness of exclusion and rejection my beautiful girl endures when surrounded by a group of teens- many of which do not give her the time of day.  I tell you this not for pity!  Oh, no... no pity please!

What should we do when our Child feels Left Out and Lonely?

* Listen to your child with Acceptance and Compassion!  This mom feels it's very important to not down play how Boom is feeling.  After all, they are her feelings and there is not a right or a wrong way to feel... letting your child know that it is OK to be sad or even angry builds trust between parent and child.  Listen to what they have to say but do not disregard their words by saying things like, "That's silly to feel that way" or "Oh, You'll get over it".

* Build Them Up- Buttercup!  Use this time to work on building that self esteem even more.  Discuss all of the wonderful qualities your child possesses.  We try to take the emphasis off of our daughter's differences and ask her to name all of the special things about her that we love so much... which usually ends up in big giggle fests here leaving all of us feeling so much better.

* Encourage Repeat Attempts to Engage in Social Activities.  So little Bobby did not knock up and invite you to play ball today...well, what about Timmy?  Let's give him a call.  That little girl who lives down the block is sitting alone on her front step right now, let's take a walk and meet her... perhaps a one on one meeting will foster a play date when the social pressures of group play are not around.

* Problem Solve the Rejection or Loneliness without Creating a Victim.  This goes hand in hand with the other suggestions above... talk with your child about why he/she feels she was rejected or left out.  If your child feels it is because of the way they look or the clothes they wear {Boom often feels it's because of her looks} discuss whether your child really wants to be friends with people who value outward appearances above who they really are inside.  We often discuss the importance of having a few great friends who love us unconditionally rather than a whole lot of people who are around when the situation suits them.  It's important to not allow your child take on the victim role... build up that esteem so that they know how incredibly wonderful they are!

* Spend Extra Time with Your child!  This mommy knows that my special girl need just needs to be reassured with my companionship a bit more than her average need sibling.  It's a rare occurance that she is not right by my side most waking hours of the day and when I am in the next room without her she will call out numerous times just to make sure I am there.  When most of us become mommies we know that our lives are no longer just ours... the addition of a child with special needs into the family simply intensifies that fact.

In our case, it does not take much to beat those lonelies right out of the picture!
It is my hope that with a few of the above tips and some genuine love and care... all children with or without special needs can beat them too!

Sparkle Worthy or Exploitation?

You may have already powered up your lap top or opened your daily news paper to read the"Sparkle" Worthy News that DC Kids Swimwear designer Dolores Cortes has chosen a model with Down Syndrome for the cover of her 2013 ad...

Valentina Guerrero, 10 months old, will be the face of DC Kids, the children’s line from Spanish designer Dolores Cortes

I have to tell you that at first glimpse, this adorably chubby little girl, Valentina Guerrero, stole my heart.  The news that DC Kids had chosen to feature her as the 'face' of their newest ad had me gleaming with joy.  What a victory for those with disability of any type!  Hope for a future with acceptance of our kids who may be 'different' in any way is on the horizon; I thought.  Definitely the type of message I want my daughter to cherish... something to ignite that Sparkle!

This glorious announcement is now being followed by ridicule and nit picking that this blogging momma finds disgusting...

{via Huff Post's FB page}

Many find this designers choice of a disabled model to be Exploitation.  Cynicism is running rampant that the company is 'using' this little girl as bait for attention by placing her on the cover and not subtly just sticking her somewhere on a back page of their catalog not to call attention to the fact that she has a special need.   Some are calling into question the need for toddler and baby swimwear...
as if the whole idea of babies and tots in bathing suits is somehow disgusting and wrong.
S.E.Smith of XoJane even states,
"the fact that once Valentina is no longer sufficiently cute, she'll be out of work."

Despite all of these attempts by the press, social Media, and nay sayers... This Momma thinks this is a Sparkle Worthy Victory!

Truth be told, my daughter is a bit too big for toddler swimsuits and we will not be purchasing one due to that fact, but I hope DC Kids sells a ton of them... thousands, millions even.

I commend DC Kids for choosing a face with Down Syndrome to grace their swimsuit cover.  Furthermore, I really don't give a darn if the whole thing was an attempt for 'look at us' exposure for the brand... because in my eyes it surely makes a statement... a miraculous statement... for all children with special needs and their families that they are beautiful and worthy of recognition!  My hope is that more and more companies, catalogs, and magazines will embrace difference and portray more than photo shopped images of perfection?

What are your thoughts?

Has little Valentina given us hope and a chance to shine... or should the company be ridiculed for Exploitation?

Zebra Striped Water Bottle Labels

I hope you all liked the glimpses of Boom's Sassy and Sweet 16 birthday party I shared the other day!
So, as promised, I'm going to share with you a more detailed look at some things we did to make her party special for her...  I'm sure this idea is so absolutely tutely original, you would have neeeever thought of on your own... Zebra Strip Labeled Water Bottles!
lol!
just kidding!

It all started a few months ago when we came across some hot pink an zebra striped paper plates and napkins at our local discount store for a buck a pack... promising Boom that the house would look like a pink paint can exploded... we set out to purchase and make all things pink and zebra.  My girl loves her some duct tape... she'd rather pick out a new roll at the store than buy a new outfit or a video game so we have A LOT!  2 days before her party, she was playing with her tape and the realization hit me to use the tape as coordinating labels for the water bottles...

I've always loved water bottle labels, but the drawback is buying special paper and using special inks because as soon as they hit ice or get wet... the beautiful colors run!  What good is water if it's not cold?  The duct tape is waterproof!  The colors will not run!

The process is pretty self explanatory... cut off old label and wrap with coordinating duct tape, ice, and serve!

First Glimpse at our Sweet 16

Many of you may remember that Boom turned 16 at the beginning of the month.  We had a small cake for her on the actual day but threw her a SwEEt BasH this past weekend.  She is my one and only girl so I had to go all out to make this birthday special for her.  Every day she is with us is cause for celebration but 16 is one of those milestone birthdays in my eyes requiring all out fuss!

Today, I thought I'd share with you a few glimpses of our decor for the day and break down some simple projects in the days to come.  Of course, you know it had to be PINK!   The whole theme of the party was dictated by some lovely hot pink and zebra stripe paper plates and napkins we found... the rest sorta evolved!

Our sweets table consisted of lots of  pink lemonade cupcakes, peanut butter cookies, candy buttons, watermelon pink licorice, a lollipop topiary, candy sticks in sweet pink flavors, and a funky pink zebra cake made by mommy!

We were able to decorate and make things look nice while remaining on a tight budget... parties do not have to break the bank!

Our 'Drink Section'  had a little something for everyone... sweet tea anyone?

Or, how about a nice cold bottle of water?  We had fun making these together!

Yep, that's me in my Cheetah print top!  Told you it was wild!

And the birthday girl blows out her candles after making a special wish!  She couldn't wait to dig into that top layer... specially made for her, carrot cake, YuMMMM!

I hope you enjoyed seeing a few glimpses of our sweet 16 today.  I'm still making my way through the links from T4 last week, please be patient, I will get there... Seems the stress of the party has brought on some severe bouts of Vertigo from my Meniere's Disease and I'm having trouble reading and focusing on the computer screen... and walking... lol... watch out for that wall!

I always feel as though I'm MIA more often than not...   this week has been one of stomach bugs for all, high fevers for Awesome, and Vertigo for Mommy.  This week has also been so much FuN!

Last weekend, I turned 21... Oh I mean, 41 {a girl can dream, right?} and we got outta dodge for the day... a BeaCH DaY - at the Jersey Shore!

It was rainy and dreary but we decided to take a chance... we set out on the 2 hour drive.  We only heard a few ' are we there' yets!

We were so thankful that the minute we stepped out of the car, it stopped raining!  The sky was a bit overcast, but was a welcome buffer to the Hot HoT Sun!

Water, sand, peace.  Just what the Doctor ordered!

Boom found a new friend on the boardwalk that night... Hermina the Crab!  Man we are stuck in a hot pink way of life lately!  By the Way... Boom is just super HoT, not sunburned... don't worry I'm a sunblock momma!

Stick around this week for some more Pink Fun!  Boom's Sweet 16 party was this weekend and I'll be sharing some photos!  You may have seen a sneak peek if you follow T&B on FB...

Freedom from Comparison thru Art

In Early July, I wrote this guest post for Crayon Freckles.  I'd like to now share it with you here in it's entirety...

When working with {or mothering in my case} a child with cognitive delays it's easy at times to get caught up in what I call 'comparison syndrome'. Comparing your child's abilities to anothers in an effort to mark milestones.  I do it; you do it regardless of our child's age or level of ability.  It's something we all do as humans without much thought or awareness.  So much of our lives are achievement based whether we realize it or not.  It starts early as our children are measured by an apgar score at birth,  we are measured, scored and graded as we enter our academic careers beginning in Kindergarten, our abilities are measured in our adult lives in jobs and in parenting... our work is compared to another's.  Many of these comparisons are important  and necessary measures of our grow and the growth of our children which are not meant to be a negative.  Our children compare themselves to others as well.  Comparison leads to growth and achievement.  As parents we need to be aware that comparison can also lead to negative self thought and self esteem.

We try very hard to not allow comparisons to steal our joy in this household.  Although we are not perfect at it {the Lord knows I am not}, we strive to nip any negative 'self comparisons' in the bud.

044

Alexis and I had an opportunity a few weeks back to spend some good quality time together sharing in Mommy's favorite activity... PaiNTing!  Both of my children, but mostly Alexis, are at times hesitant to draw or paint with me.  They look at my art and tend to compare their skills to mine.  It is then my job to instill the confidence and direction they need to accept themselves as the wonderfully made talented gifts they are.

alexispaintingpot-1

It's important for me to just make the materials available, usually brainstorming with them for an idea of a finished product, but allowing them the freedom to explore their 'own' talent.  Alexis had decided she would like to make her teacher, bus driver, and her 2 aides each a flower pot as a thank you gift for the end of the school year.

Children of all ages and abilities love to paint! It's a fantastic way to allow your child to explore their creative side while working on some hand eye coordination at the same time. Gotta love when therapeutic activities are disguised as fun time!  Our paint activity was split between 2 days as attention span is a continued work in progress here.  If you have younger children or kids with short attention spans as Alexis does, do not be afraid to split your activities into different sessions... happy kids make for happy Mommies!

claypotsalexis

We worked on our organizational skills while gathering the supplies we needed to accomplish our goal.  Alexis carefully chose her paint colors and we set up shop at the kitchen table.  Mommy sat close by chatting and offering tips only when asked!  I wanted her to just have the freedom to do as she pleased... there is no right or wrong answer with art!  She covered her pots with vibrant colors and polka dots making sure to add the 'boop' noise with each press of the sponge to place her dots{oooh that hand eye coordination at work}. We giggled and enjoyed a snack as she allowed them to dry.
047-1

We filled each pot with dirt and flowers... such a rewarding experience!  Mommy did help a bit with cutting a few flags and the word 'Thanks" which were carefully threaded onto bamboo skewers and inserted into the pots.  She was filled with pride as she lovingly gave each person on her list a gift from her heart.  I can't help but think she felt such an incredible confidence boost knowing that she did them herself!

Quick Tips - Fine Sanding with a Nail File

Quick tip today for those of you, like me, who find painting a passion.

You know how it is, you're browsing your local craft supermart and find some cute little unfinished wood pieces and the inspiration strikes.  You get home, give them a quick little sanding and get to painting... then you notice all of the those little flakes of wood that seem to just "pop up".

It never fails... the little whole in those pre-made birdhouses always seem to want to pop up just as I finish one!

So how do you fix that without ruining all of the hard work you just put in?  Those little wholes and tight spaces make it impossible to get a palm sander or even a mouse sander in there... even wrapping a piece of sand paper around your finger to get in there can be difficult!

Tah Dah!
Nail File to the rescue!

Using a nail file is the quickest, easiest, most painless way I've found to knock those stinkers off!  If you're sanding pre- painting use a new one... works wonders and you can buy a pack at your local dollar store.  Use one that's kind of worn out works great on those little painted areas because most times it won't even disturb your painted surface!

Ummm, hello Thursday... where did you come from?

The days are flying by here as we do our best to avoid the heatwaves smothering much of the country.  Figured we could play a bit of the catch up game here.

Boom had fun with our recent Flat Me visitor these past few weeks.  You  may remember that we are participating in the Flat Me summer exchange organized by the amazing Andie at Crayon Freckles.   Although we did not get to visit some of our local sites with our visitor as I intended, we did get to celebrate Boom's birthday and the 4th of July with her...

Something I never get enough of are photos of myself and the kids together... I'm usually the one snapping the shots... plus I do NOT like the extra poundage that's made it's way to my chin and middle!  My current joke is that I have been managing to 'find' the pounds that Boom has managed to 'lose' lately!  Daddy was so kind as to grab a few good ones as we set up at the local High School to watch the fireworks...

They are growing waaaay too fast!

Meanwhile,  I am rather frantically trying to spruce up the house a bit before we have Boom's big party next weekend to celebrate her Sweet 16 with some friends and family... my color inspirations are a cross between turquoise blues and golden shades with bright white trim.  I just cannot get this wall color right!

It's looking too baby blue when up on the wall for my taste... a color I've concocted myself from gathered up mistints {cheap at the Depot!}  looks like I'll be adding a drop of green and some more gray... maybe some deeper blue.  Gee, wonder what I'll be doing today!

Anyone else like me start painting when the hubby leaves for work and paint right around those pieces of furniture til he gets back home for the heavy lifting?  This way he can't talk me out of starting the project 'cause he doesn't feel like it that week too!

I think I forgot to share that Mr. Awesome left elementary school this June and is headed for the big Jr High!  So proud of this dude... walked away with a Presidential Educational Achievement Award too!

Things are might busy... but we are escaping Saturday for a wee bit of beach fun!  Then it's back to party prep!  See ya soon!
